The Sun, UV Radiation and Your Eyes
It is important to understand the role that the sun can play in the overall health of our eyes. The sun emits many different types of energy that can be beneficial in moderation, or harmful if we aren’t properly protected. Ultraviolet or UV rays are emitted from the sun and can cause sunburns, or damage our eyes. UV rays can also be reflected from other surfaces like water, snow, sand, or from glass windows from cars or buildings.
While there are many beneficial reasons to be outside, protecting your eyes from prolonged or direct UV exposure can be critical. UV radiation has been linked to cataracts, cancer, growths on the eyes, and even snow blindness. These issues can be more prevalent in certain populations. If you spend a lot of time outside like fishermen, farmers, surfers, or skiers you are at a higher risk due to the prolonged exposure.
